Frozen lakes warning

ANDOVER police are warning youngsters who are tempted to play on frozen ponds they are risking their lives. With the recent cold weather and freezing conditions, a number of children have been seen playing on frozen areas of Anton Lakes. To make matters worse, vital lifesaving aids have been thrown onto the lake from their holdings at the side of the water, rendering them useless in times of emergency. Sgt Kevin McCarthy said: "It may seem like fun at the time but you cannot see the depth of the water when it is frozen and by going onto the ice you are at risk of losing your life." The message goes out to all members of the public - some adults have also been seen walking across the frozen lake. A woman walking her dog along the beauty spot said she had seen parents taking children onto the treacherous ice, in particular `a middle aged man' pulling two young children across the ice in a boat. In 1995, 25-year-old postman Robert Giles died after falling through the ice at Anton Lakes while trying to rescue his dog. The Environment Agency is also advising the public to take extra care in cold weather warning it is `highly dangerous' to venture out onto ice covered water. Dog owners exercising their animals near frozen water have been told dogs are `just as vulnerable to drowning under these conditions as human beings'. An Agency spokesperson said: "Anyone walking or driving near to rivers, ponds or lakes should be aware that conditions are potentially treacherous and should exercise extreme caution. "We are concerned that an accident on ice could in minutes turn a winter wonderland into a place of tragedy."  more...
