Spiderman is bound for Hampshire

From the archive, first published Wednesday 29th Sep 1999.

SPIDERMAN is looking forward to the challenge in Hampshire next season, once the fine print has been sorted out on his contract offer.

Hampshire have confirmed they have made an offer to England bowler Alan Mullally to pair him up with Shane Warne in what could be one of the most potent county cricket attacks next summer.

Mullally insists that Hampshire's offer is half of what he originally asked for but that he wants to come to the county and is relishing the challenge a change of scene will provide.

Spider's contract at Leicestershire doesn't officially expire until tomorrow, but the county had given him permission to speak to other counties in the knowledge he was not likely to sign for them again.

Hampshire were quick to get in on the ground floor and cash in on Mullally's desire to move south, and although Hampshire are playing it cool, Spider's arrival is a matter of dotting I's and crossing T's.

Mullally has already said he seems "one hundred and ten per cent certain" that he will be a Hampshire player next season and added: "I need something to freshen me up and I think the move to Hampshire will do just that.

"Of course, I still hope to be part of the England set-up but I would still be playing plenty of games for Hampshire."
