THE Tobaccomen are still burning a trail at the top of the Jewson Wessex League.
Two-goal Tommy Pegler marked his return to BAT with a glorious goal-den double in last night's rain-swept 2-1 victory over Whitchurch United which keeps Ray Light's men a point clear at the top.
With Andover and Totton cancelling each other out in a 0-0 draw at the Portway Stadium, champions Lymington & New Milton were able to catapult up to second with a 4-1 home win over Eastleigh.
Paul Sims fired the Linnets ahead with a 15th-minute penalty, but Eastleigh replied through a Richard Cort own goal and could have gone ahead but for a 26th-minute penalty miss by defender Charlie Balfe.
Balfe's night deteriorated when he limped off with a dislocated toe and Lymington made off with the points thanks to further efforts from Sims, Steve Strong and Brett Phillips.
The margin of Linnets' victory was a timely boost for Derek Binns' men ahead of Saturday's big FA Cup third qualifying round clash against Clevedon Town at Fawcetts Field.
Fleet Town kick-started their season with a 3-2 Dr Martens League Eastern Division result over Witney at Calthorpe Park - their first points of the season.
New manager Chick Botley worked his magic to conjure up goals from Mark Frampton, Dean Thomas and Dylan Pearson before Witney responded with two goals in the last minute.
Striker Thomas was one of three Fleet debutants signed from Kingstonian along with goalkeeper Andy Hunt and midfielder Michael Lester.
